I used to think a good outfit had to be either fully relaxed or fully sharp, and mixing the two always looked messy. After wearing both styles for years, I learned the opposite: a relaxed piece and a sharper piece can balance each other, as long as the fit is right and one part of the outfit stays simple.
Denim is where I start. I look for a straight or slightly tapered leg with room in the thigh, a waistband that stays in place, and a clean break at the shoe. Very baggy jeans can swallow shoes, while very tight jeans can make a relaxed hoodie look top heavy. I wash denim inside out in cold water and air dry it when I can, which has kept the colour deeper and the fabric firmer. I check Amiri style denim cuts when I want a cleaner leg shape, because a neat taper under a hoodie keeps the outfit from looking shapeless.
Hoodies and tees are the next layer. I prefer a midweight fleece that holds its shape at the shoulders and does not go thin at the elbows, but I keep a lighter loopback version for mild days and for layering under a jacket. A hood should sit flat when it is down, not bunch behind the neck, and cuffs should stay at the wrist. I start many relaxed outfits with Mixed Emotion pieces, because their easy cuts give me room to layer a jacket on top without adding bulk at the waist.
A sharper layer pulls the outfit together. An unstructured jacket, a clean overshirt, or a neat coat over a hoodie can make the look feel intentional, as long as the jacket is not too tight to close over the layers underneath. I check the shoulder seam first: it should sit close to my natural shoulder, not droop down my arm. A jacket that ends at the hip works well with a hoodie underneath, while a much longer coat needs slimmer bottoms to keep the balance.
Accessories should do one job at a time. A plain cap, a simple belt, and clean shoes are usually enough. When I want one stronger detail, I add Chrome Hearts style metal accents sparingly, one piece at a time, so the detail stands out instead of competing with the jacket, hoodie, and denim all at once.
My care routine protects the fit I worked on. I wash hoodies and tees inside out, air dry denim and heavier jackets when I can, and hang jackets on wide hangers so shoulders keep their shape. Before I keep an outfit, I wear it for a full normal day: walking, sitting, and carrying a bag. If nothing needs constant adjusting and the layers still sit cleanly by evening, the mix has earned its place in my rotation.
